What Are Fixed Braces?
Fixed braces are the gold standard in orthodontic treatment. Consisting of high-grade brackets securely attached to the front of your teeth and connected by a thin archwire, they apply gentle, continuous pressure to guide your teeth into their ideal positions over time.
Fixed braces are exceptionally effective for treating a wide variety of orthodontic concerns, including:
-
Crowded or overlapping teeth
-
Gaps and spacing issues
-
Overbites, underbites, and crossbites
-
Protruding teeth
-
Complex bite alignments
Personalised Braces: Tailored Just for You
We believe that no two smiles are alike, which is why your treatment is completely customisable! With personalised braces, you can express your personality and make your orthodontic journey uniquely yours:
-
Custom Colour Ties (Ligatures): Choose from a vibrant rainbow of colours to match your mood, celebrate a holiday, or support your favourite sports team at every adjustment visit. Prefer a more subtle look? We also offer tooth-coloured or clear ties for a discreet appearance.
-
Tailored Treatment Planning: Dr. Fatima designs your orthodontic plan around your facial features, jaw structure, and specific functional needs to ensure not just a straighter smile, but optimal long-term oral health.
How to Take Care of Your Braces
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene while wearing fixed braces is essential to protect your teeth from staining, decay, and gum inflammation. Follow these expert tips to keep your smile sparkling throughout your treatment:
1. Brushing Like a Pro
-
Frequency: Brush your teeth after every meal and snack, spending at least two minutes each time.
-
Technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush (or an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head). Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle to clean above the brackets, and then tilt it upwards to clean underneath the wires and brackets.
-
Fluoride Toothpaste: Always use a fluoride toothpaste to strengthen your enamel and prevent white spot lesions.
2. Flossing Made Easy
-
Specialised Tools: Traditional flossing can be tricky with wires in the way. Use floss threaders or orthodontic floss (which has a stiffened end) to thread the floss underneath the main wire.
-
Interdental Brushes: Use tiny, conical interdental brushes to gently clean the spaces between your brackets and underneath the wire where toothbrush bristles cannot reach.
-
Frequency: Floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime.
3. Foods to Avoid
- Sticky & Chewy Foods: Chewing gum, caramels, sticky lollies, and jujubes.
- Hard & Crunchy Foods: Hard lollies, ice, whole apples, raw carrots, and crusty bread (cut these into bite-sized pieces instead!).
- Sugary Snacks & Drinks: Minimise sugary treats and soft drinks, which can easily pool around brackets and cause rapid decay.
Frequently asked questions
Having braces put on is completely painless! After your placement and following routine wire adjustments, you may experience some mild soreness, aching, or tightness for 2 to 5 days. This is completely normal and simply means your teeth are actively moving. Soft foods and mild over-the-counter pain relief can help keep you comfortable during these brief adjustment periods.
Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of your bite and how your teeth respond, but the average timeframe ranges from 12 to 24 months. Dr Fatima will provide a personalised timeline estimate during your initial consultation.
You will typically need to visit Dr Fatima every 4 to 6 weeks. These quick appointments allow us to check your progress, make necessary wire adjustments, and ensure your treatment stays right on schedule.
Yes, absolutely! However, if you play contact sports, we strongly recommend wearing a custom-fitted orthodontic mouthguard to protect your lips, cheeks, and braces. If you play wind or brass instruments, there may be a brief adjustment period, but you will quickly get back into the swing of things with some orthodontic wax for comfort.
If a bracket becomes loose or a wire is irritating your cheek, don’t panic! Cover the area with a small ball of clean orthodontic wax to stop any irritation, and contact our clinic as soon as possible so we can book you in for a quick repair.
